Telogen Effluvium is a type of non- scarring hair loss categorised by unexpected hair shedding. Normal hair loss is around 80-100 hairs each day but with telogen effluvium you can lose more than 400 plus hairs a day! This disease can happen anytime and is more common in women because of hormonal changes in menopause.
Telogen Effluvium happens when a large number of hair follicles suddenly decide to take a rest at the same time known as the Telogen Phase. Three to four months later the resting hair sheds as new hair begins to take its place.
Why does this happen all of a sudden? Normally this happens when a traumatic event causes the condition for example illness accompanied by high fever, chronic illness such as cancer, hormonal changes after giving birth or birth control, change in diet such as anorexia, medications, major surgery, big life changes such as divorce, death or job loss.
New hair won’t start growing until you shed first, the condition normalise itself after the trauma and is not permanent.
